No Longer Separated
Pastor Todd Crofford

Around noon darkness came over the entire land and lasted until three in the afternoon. The sun had stopped shining. The curtain in the temple was split in two.
-Luke 23:44-45 GW

My mom was very fussy about her shower curtains.  They had to be pristine.  At the first sign of discoloration or mold she would have me replace hers. I always thought it was a hassle to change the curtain and liner using those shower hooks, but at least they were pretty light.

I can’t even imagine what it was like to deal with the curtain that separated the Holy of Holies.  It was sixty feet tall, thirty feet wide, and four inches thick- made of finely woven material and yarn. Can you even imagine?  No human would ever been able to tear that in two. But God did!

The symbolism of that action is so powerful.  No longer would humankind be separated from God. Jesus had now become the way to the father.

This evening as we gather together and take communion, we will celebrate all that Jesus did for us at such a great cost. Of all the celebratory services we hold all year long, it is appropriate to enter this evening differently. Tonight we come solemn and thoughtful, silently preparing our hearts to remember the suffering he took on himself as he bore our sins once for all. Thanks be to Jesus our redeemer.
