Who Sets the Bar?

Who sets the bar?
Pastor Chrissy Cooney

Do you consider yourself a good person?

How do you know? Do you think you’re good because you don’t do some of the bad things that you’ve seen others do? Do you think you’re bad because you’ve done something awful?

If you are comparing yourself to others - that’s not accurate, it’s not good for you and it’s not godly!

Comparison is not accurate because there will always be someone better and there will always be someone worse. That’s like trying to measure the distance between two points when one of those points keeps moving.

Comparison is not good for you because it keeps you looking in the wrong direction. It has you looking at other people instead of at your Creator.

Comparison isn’t godly because only God can set the standards for our life. Jesus is the standard and compared to Him we all fall short.

In Luke Chapter 18 we read the story of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. The Pharisee walks into the temple and says, “God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.  I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.” (Luke 18:11-12)

His eyes are on “other men” and he is using them as his measuring stick.
But the Tax Collector gets it right, “And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’” (Luke 18:13).

Friends, let’s keep our eyes on God – He is the measuring stick, and we all fall short. Let’s thank God for His mercy toward us! He alone can make us more like Him!
