Run!
Pastor Chrissy Cooney
When my dog Lilo was a puppy, we were at the vet and she did something very unexpected. She was standing on the metal exam table, with my arms around her loosely. Suddenly she climbed up my body, went over my shoulder, down my back, and fled quickly across the room. She had seen or felt something she didn’t like, and off she went, as fast as her feet would take her.
That’s exactly how we are to react when tempted with any kind of sexual sin. Paul gives us these instructions in 1 Corinthians 6:18, “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.”
He doesn’t tell us to stick around and fight urges, tackle temptations, or put good ole’ self-control to the test; he says, RUN! Get out of there! Don’t flirt with danger, the risk is too great. Remove yourself from that situation.
What does this look like practically? It might be turning off the tv or the computer and finding something else to do. It might look like throwing a book or movie in the trash. Maybe it means leaving the room, or just not going to that party at all. Perhaps it comes down to never being alone with that person or refusing to even get into that text conversation.
Lilo didn’t get very far that day, the door to the room was closed and she was pretty much trapped. Not so with us, God promises to always give us a way out (1 Cor 10:13). When you feel the Holy Spirit saying, “run”, find your escape route and take it.
