Do You Pray This Way?
Pastor Chrissy Cooney
Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” Luke 22:39-40
This must be an important instruction.
First and foremost, it’s an instruction on prayer from the EXPERT on prayer.
Second, Jesus gives this instruction TWICE. Once here in verse 40, and then again in verse 46: “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Third, we find it contained in Jesus’ instruction on HOW to pray in Matthew 6:13 “And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”
I wonder if Peter would have stayed awake and prayed against temptation if he knew that in just a few short hours, before the night was even over, he would succumb to the temptation to deny his Savior not once, not twice, but three times. I wonder if he would have prayed differently. I wonder if he would have taken this instruction from Jesus more seriously.
I wonder if you and I would pray against temptation if we knew the kinds of temptations that are coming our way in the next day, week, month, or year.
Lord, please make me aware of the areas that I am most easily tempted. Please help me to see the temptation and recognize it for what it is. Please help me find the way out that You have already provided for me (1 Corinthians 10:13) and give me the strength to turn away from the very thing that tempts me.
