Against The Grain
Pastor Todd Crofford
Jesus noticed how the guests always chose the places of honor.
-Luke 14:7 GW
Remember high school and all those times we paid attention to who ate at the cool kids table? If only we had left that behind when we became adults.
When we are talking to someone and they are looking all around as we speak, making sure they aren’t missing someone more important to talk to.
We stress over who has the attention of the boss most often at the board meeting?
We keep score of who is getting more likes on the pictures of their vacation, their home addition or their dog’s new haircut.
Humility intentionally places ourselves in lower positions, letting God raise us up where he sees fit. We start a conversation with the person who seems most out-of-place at the party. We worry more about doing our job well than impressing our boss. We keep social media in its place, knowing media popularity adds absolutely nothing to our lives. Any popularity, recognition or acclaim we ever receive goes to God’s glory alone.
In the end, mankind may regard and even reward popularity, but Jesus’ followers go against the grain, and God sees humility as the currency of his kingdom.

Speaking personally and taking it one step further acknowledging both your capabilities and areas where you can improve, help foster a realistic view of yourself. And although a tough lesson, I've learned that actively practicing self-awareness, acknowledging my strengths and weaknesses, listening to others, showing empathy, and admitting mistakes helps me stay humble. Thank you!
