Be Careful What You Wish For
Pastor Chris Wood
In June of 1971, a movie starring Gene Wilder became a part of our cultural norm. The movie was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This movie made it appear as if anything was possible between the golden tickets, the Oompa-Loompas, and the shrinking ray machine.
We are introduced to a character named Veruca Salt . She will do anything to get the golden ticket. There is a pivotal scene where she turns to her dad and says, “BUT I WANT IT NOW, DADDY!” Her dad looks at her with sweat beaming down his face and tells her, “I am doing everything I can.” Veruca in the movie represents in all of us the desire to want it now. Whatever it may be, we have to be careful that whatever our golden ticket is, it does not destroy us from the inside out.
In James 1:14-15 it says 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
Later on in the movie, even after Veruca gets the golden ticket, she turns her attention to the everlasting gobstopper. That which was once the only thing she desired was no longer enough. She needed more.
If we are not careful, it will become a never-ending pursuit. Life is more than the golden ticket that the world offers. Today’s golden ticket will become tomorrow’s yesterday’s happiness.
