Your Old Self Vs. The New

Your Old Self Vs. The New

My younger years had top chart songs like Don’t Cha, Candy Shop and Milkshake. If you don’t know these songs, no need to go look them up. Let’s just say they would be on the Top 100 sinful hits. That season was not my closest walk with God and so I belted them out in the car and danced to them with my friends in college.

Flash forward to today and I’m a wife and mom with a home and family to care for and sometimes you just need to put on some hip, pumping music to motivate you to scrub a toilet. I remember one day, I was playing old college hits while I was cleaning when the lyrics of a song just hit me. They were provocative and demeaning and I was immediately convicted by the Holy Spirit that this music was not okay in God’s eyes. The fact that I didn’t want my kids hearing it was also a hint!

Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:22-24:
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

I had a very clear choice that day and every day since – I could entertain my old desires and listen to that music or I could turn it off and find something that was righteous in God’s eyes. We will all find ourselves in the inevitable fork in the road between the world’s way and God’s way. But be reassured to know you have matured in your walk with God when you’ve found yourself there!
