Reality Check
Pastor Chrissy Cooney
“I can guarantee that this tax collector went home with God’s approval, but the Pharisee didn’t. Everyone who honors himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be honored.” Luke 18:14
I recently received a lesson in how to drive an RV. Getting behind the wheel of that giant vehicle and understanding the damage that it could do if used carelessly had a huge impact on me. As I drove, I was aware of every move that I made, where the trees are, where the curb is, what’s around me, and how long it will take to stop. Yet I get behind the wheel of my own vehicle daily, and don’t think about any of those things.
The point is – if we’re comfortable with how we are doing something, we stop being careful. That’s called complacency, and complacency leaves a lot of room for mistakes, accidents, and unintended damage. Complacency will often lead to a reality check – and a humbling experience.
The truth is, not one of us is perfect. That’s true in things like driving, but it’s even more true in our relationship with the Lord. We all fall short.
In light of that fact, here is a challenge for today – find a quiet place to get alone with the Lord and ask Him to show you where you need a reality check. Then close your eyes, sit still, and listen for what He has to say. Is there a situation that comes to mind where you could have been more kind, gentle, or patient? Is He pointing out something you need to stop doing, or something you need to start doing? What is He saying to you about your own life?
