The Centurion's Faith

Do you know someone who is just an all around great person? They don’t know a stranger and are admired by their friends and family. They treat the janitor in their building just the same as the CEO. That is the Centurion in Luke’s story today. He was a well respected Roman Centurion, cared deeply for his servant and was highly esteemed amongst the Jews, and even funded the build of their synagogue. He seems to be just an all around good guy bridging the gap between Gentiles and Jews in that day.

The Centurion was also keenly aware of Jesus’s connection to God and miraculous abilities. After summoning him to come heal his dying servant, the Centurion had him stopped at a distance from his home as he was not worthy to have him under his roof. The Centurion related to Jesus, “For I am a man under authority, with solders under me.” Luke 7:8. He understood he was only able to lead Roman soldiers and have servants under his authority as a Centurion due to his submission to the authority ranks above him.

In this statement, he recognizes that Jesus is able to do these miracles because of his submission to the Father and that his spiritual authority is granted to him due to this perfect relationship. He understood that Jesus did not need to physically touch his servant to heal him, but could conduct any miracle from anywhere under the power of his heavenly Father.
Jesus’ response: Amazement! Amazement at this Gentile’s complete understanding that Jesus was Christ, the anointed one from God. The guy who shouldn’t get it culturally speaking – GETS IT! I pray we all can have a faith like the Centurion, unclouded by religion, politics and social status.
