Salt & Light

November 25th
Salt and Light
By: Kaleigh Hoschar

I stood in a garden the summer before my  junior year of high school and I got a phone call from my mom.

She told me that the young woman, who was like a big sister to me, had just passed and was in the arms of Jesus.

Her name was Samantha Gray and she finished the race well.

You see, Sam was a light. In a world where she suffered from brain cancer she still found a way to smile and share Jesus with others. To be salt in people’s lives.

She never stopped running the race until it was time for her to go home.

She was big picture minded and cared for those around her. She made time to love me and care for my family. To sit with us, and serve with us. For teariffic runs and final walks through the neighborhood.

Her smile was infectious.

All of those little moments…

Matthew 5:13-15 says “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”

If there is one thing I learned from watching and walking with Sam, it is that Jesus calls us to be salt and light.

To finish the race that God has set before us no matter the cost.
