The Timeless Sacrifice of Christ
By: Anna Williams
When my husband and I were dating (over 20 years ago), he gave me a necklace that was high quality, sterling silver that he had bought while deployed in Turkey. And just a few weeks ago, I was surprised to find that the clasp had broken.
It surprised me because we tend to think of silver and gold as being high quality materials that can often last generations. In fact, just last month archaeologists found a stash of gold coins buried in Turkey that dated from the fifth century BC!
“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” – 1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV
I love how the Apostle Peter somewhat flippantly describes these precious metals as “perishable things” because he understands the true nature, value and timelessness of what Christ gave to us.
Jesus knew that we cannot buy our way out of the sin and destruction that plagued every generation since Adam and Eve. No amount of digging, toiling, burning or refining would ever be enough. The cycle could only be broken by the ultimate sacrifice – and he loved us enough to lay down his life to be that sacrifice.
In the last week, have you been living for, striving towards or focusing on perishable things? Or have you been living a life of redemption and gratitude for what Christ has done?
