Better is One Day
By: Pastor Melissa Beauvais

Psalm 84:10-12

During the pandemic era, my back porch became my sanctuary, and at times, it still is. I long and take in the opportunity when the weather and nothing to do all fall into place.  It was the space where I met with God for hours. With nothing to do and nowhere to go, all I had was time to sit with Him. I immersed myself in His Word, prayed, sang, danced, journaled, watched His creation do what it does, and soaked it all in. It was just me and God.
When gathering rules began to lift and uninterrupted time was soon filled with activities and places to be and go, my time in God’s presence also shifted. I had to find new rhythms and non-negotiable spaces where He and I could be alone. As the psalmist writes, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere;” (v10). I had discovered that I could not allow anything to come between.

Jesus made it possible for the temple to be within us. Holy Spirit dwells within us! God’s presence is everywhere we go. So, while I long for the back porch days, what I really long for is time with my God, anywhere that is. The psalmist goes on, “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God; than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” In other words, it is better to spend one hour than none at all. Better is one-half hour than none at all. Better is one minute than none at all.

God is your “sun and shield” (v11), your light and defender of your day. Apart from Him is darkness and fear. Take a moment and get away with God, worship Him, thank Him, and glorify Him anywhere you may be.
