Watch Your Affections
By: Pastor Amie

Pick the Bible verse!

~ “Thou shall follow thine heart!”
~ “Do what makes you happy, for thou only live once!”
~ “Sometimes following your heart, means losing your mind.”

Ok. I tricked you. None of these are Bible verses. They're the opposite of scripture. I have a sneaky suspicion you knew that already. You know what is a verse from the Bible though?

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
-Proverbs 4:23

And…
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
-Mark 12:30

Stated simply, love God first! Don’t merely set your wants aside for God. Rather, ask Him to search your heart and expose the motive in your desire! The Holy Spirit is so counterculture, isn’t He? He gives radically different advice from the world around us.

One thing I love to do is premarital counseling. The reason I love doing this is because most people don’t realize idolatry is the biggest killer in a marriage. You see, your spouse isn’t your soul mate. Rather, they are your helpmate and God alone, is your soulmate. He is who we love first, so that we love everyone and everything else better. To put anything in God's seat, is to set yourself up for disappointment.

When we step outside of God's plan for this life the best we ever get is good. If we want GOD-good, we must do things God's way. A heartbreaking amount of people don’t realize that. This truth shouldn’t surprise us. A hotdog on the grill is the greatest thing ever if you’ve never been to Ruth’s Chris. Yes. I am saying that when you don’t follow God’s design for parenting, marriage, careers, and affections you simply don’t realize you’re settling for a hotdog. Isn’t that good news today? Life CAN get better!

What if the biggest joy killer in your life right now is misguided affections?
