Follow the Spirit
By: Pastor Mark White
He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us,
who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
Romans 8:4
Have you ever found yourself doing the one thing that you didn’t want to do?
In Romans 7 the Apostle Paul describes a similar struggle. Interestingly, there is no mention of the Holy Spirit in that same chapter. But in chapter 8, the Apostle Paul references the Holy Spirit around twenty times. It’s as if in chapter 7 Paul is trying to live the Christian life in his own strength. But in Chapter 8 he realizes that Help is available.
The Holy Spirit will enable us to live the life God has called us to.
In Romans 8:3-4, Paul writes, “God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.”
Look at someone who wakes up in the morning and makes spending time with Jesus a priority…listens to Christian music, worship music, or a Bible study podcast while they are driving. They attend church regularly and are even involved in a small group. They are allowing the Holy Spirit to work in their lives, and as a result they will find it easier to walk in obedience to the word of the Lord. They are getting stronger.
In contrast, look at the one who continually neglects spending time with the Lord in Bible study and prayer…listening to anything else but music that will edify them spiritually while they are driving. Going to church on occasion and who are not involved in a small group. They say, “No,” to the Holy Spirit’s promptings and, as a result will find it impossible to walk in obedience to the Lord.
Follow the Holy Spirit. Position ourselves at the foot of the cross. Build yourself up in the most holy faith. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in walking in obedience to the Lord.
This is not a works-based righteousness. It’s a working righteousness. And the way to do it is with the help of the Holy Spirit.
