Don’t Dismiss the Miracle!
By: Pastor Amie Donovan
“Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.” -Luke 9:12
Have you ever been overwhelmed by a need? You look around and the task assigned just seems more than you can bear, so you ask God, “Take this away from me!” That is what we see in the passage above. Jesus has been preaching to the multitudes from early until late. The disciples had been so busy they had not eaten, nor had the crowd. They know evening is upon them, so they say to Jesus, “Send the multitude away.”
To which Jesus replies, “No. What is in your hand?”
We all know this story. Jesus then takes 5 loaves and 2 fish and feeds 5,000, not including women and children. We celebrate Jesus every time we hear this story! We sit in awe over a God who can work miracles amid our ‘not enough.’ We love the Jesus in Luke 9, don’t we?
In verse 12, the disciples were not expecting a miracle from the problem but rather a bigger problem. “Send them away” is not the posture of expectancy but rather a posture of reality. The reality is what they had wasn’t enough.
When we give our ‘not enough’ into the hands of Jesus, He reveals with Him we have all we will ever need. Jesus isn’t just the God of Luke 9! He is the same God who wants you to surrender what is in your hands today!
Next time you look at the problem in front of you and you want to pray it away, I challenge you instead to pray this prayer.
Holy Spirit, into your hands I commit my circumstance. I will bring all I am to the table trusting that whatever you bring me to, you are faithful to bring me through.
-Amen
