Give Me Understanding
By: Pastor Amie Donovan

“Give your servant, therefore, an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” -1 Kings 3:9

A young Solomon went to sleep one night when God met him in a dream. God approaches Solomon and says, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

Can you imagine?

Seriously! Think about this for just a moment. God comes to you and says, “Daughter/Son, ask me for anything!”

What would you ask for? Stop and think about that.

Solomon didn’t ask for more money, power, or influence. Rather, he looked around and took note of the great blessings God had already granted his father, David.

Solomon sees a “Chosen and great people, too many to be numbered.” (3:8) He knows he’s governing this great generation, so he seeks but one thing:

An understanding mind.

He asks God to help him think well, so he can lead well. The chapter goes on to say this request pleased God and he was granted above what was even asked.

Father God, I want a heart like Solomon in this request. Today, would I look at all you’ve given me and request but one thing. God, would you give me an understanding mind that sees this great generation of people and leads them well? You lead, and I’ll follow.

In Jesus Christ's Name,
Amen
