Worthy Of Worship
By: Pastor Mark White
“…God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light,
whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.”
The Apostle Paul gives a final charge to a young pastor – it’s not the charge that gets my attention, but how he invokes it. The command he gives is serious. He wants Timothy to know that it’s serious, so he invokes the name of Jesus, the return of Christ, and the authority of Christ as the King of Kings. And to Him goes all honor, power, and glory.
Usually, our focus on Jesus goes toward other titles of our Lord like Savior, Messiah, or the Christ. For instance, Peter declares that Jesus is, “The Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus is also King of Kings and as King, He is worthy of worship. We don’t have to look very far in scripture to see an example of the worship He deserves. When the Magi came to worship Him, Scripture says, “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” (Matt. 2:11)
They weren’t going through the motions – here we see Kingly worship being modeled & The gifts matched their understanding of Him…
Gold held immense value and was associated with royalty and nobility. The burning of Frankincense was associated with worshiping a God. And Myrrh was a key ingredient in the spice mixture that people used to prepare bodies for burial.
Each gift represented a key aspect of Jesus's life & mission as King. Jesus is Worthy of Worship–that reflects our understanding of who He is & what He has done for us. We worship Him as creator, savior, redeemer, protector, healer … and we worship Him as King.
