Trust and Obey
By: Lori Ennis

Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act. Psalm 37:3-5

Do you ever feel like God is asking you to do something you just.don’t.want.to.do?

Even if you feel His hand in it…you hear Him assure you that He’s in every detail of what He’s asking of you?

Being a military spouse who has moved more times than someone who detests moving should ever really have to, this unsettling feeling is not unfamiliar to me.

And I do.not.like.it.

Because I want to *want* to obey…it’s just that more often than not, I’d like to obey when what I hear God asking me to do is what I’d already planned (or wanted) to do anyway.

But that’s not real life, Real Life. His plans are not our plans and His thoughts are not our thoughts, and how many of us can say, “THANK YOU, JESUS!” for that when we think about some of the things that could have happened if WE were in control and didn’t obey?

I know I can.

So, when I hear God ask me to do something I just don’t want to do, the old hymn, “Trust and Obey,” keeps running through my head.

“But we never can prove,
The delights of His love,
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,
And the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.”

Just as we sang this past Sunday, great is His faithfulness. When we trust and obey Him, and delight ourselves in doing what HE asks of us, He will act. If you’re unsure of the next step in whatever it is you’re looking at, trust and obey. The joy He will bestow is there…when we trust and obey.
