Who Is Called To Be Generous?
Anna Williams
“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” Proverbs 19:17 ESV
It can be tempting to exclude ourselves from the command to be generous if we ourselves are poor in wealth. We may think that since we have little or no money to give, surely this disqualifies us. However, there are many examples in the Bible when God required His children to give from the very little that they had. Generosity is an attitude of our hearts and it is evidence of God’s love living within us.
“Looking up, He {Jesus} saw the rich people putting their gifts into the treasury. And He saw a poor widow putting in two small copper coins. He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in [proportionally] more than all of them; for they all put in gifts from their abundance; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21:1-4 AMP
Sometimes God will call us to be generous with things other than money. The Good Samaritan gave of his time and his efforts to meet the needs of the man he found in the ditch, not only money. (Luke 10:25-37) If you have a sandwich, you have something you can share with another person. The young boy who shared his meager lunch of a few loaves and fish saw Jesus multiply it and feed thousands! (Matthew 14:14-21) When we are willing to be used by God and give generously, we get the opportunity to witness the amazing works of God.
The world’s message is that we should keep as much as we can to ourselves because we can only rely on ourselves for our survival. This is a lie. When we entrust our lives to God and make Jesus the Lord of our lives, we can give freely, knowing that all that we have is given to us by Him. If the Holy Spirit prompts us to give something away, He will replace it. You cannot out-give God!! I want to encourage you to begin to see your possessions as opportunities to bless others. Whether you have many or very few, God can use them!
