You Don’t Want To Miss That
By: Lori Ennis

"The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 'Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.' But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish." Jonah 1:1-3

I’m not sure about you, but I don’t like change. I don’t really seek new and different, and find comfort in things staying the same. Ironic, since most of my adult life has been spent moving over and over again where the military called us to go.

No, I’m a lot like Jonah. He did not want to go to Ninevah when God called him to, and I can’t blame him. He had a comfortable life, probably had a good community and no major threats to contentment and God was asking him to go tell a group of people that he wasn’t even super fond of to repent so they could be saved. In truth, that would have been a pretty quick, “Nope, not my favorite plan idea, God,” from me.

Still, God’s gracious. He’ll reply with, “Okay, but I can’t promise my best if you’re not obedient.” That’s just what happened to Jonah. He chose not to heed what God had for him and ended up captive inside a sea creature for a few days. Yikes.

When Jonah finally agreed to go, God allowed him to see something spectacular! He saw mass conversion and transformation of the Ninevites–a miraculous and awe-striking power of the Holy Spirit in action.

Jonah could have missed that.

Few of us like to step out of our comfort zones, but seasons of change God has for us often require that. Maybe God’s asking you to step away from sinful behavior. Maybe He’s asking you to step up at church. Maybe He’s asking you to leave the job with the big dollars for the job that fills your soul and moves His kingdom forward.

Whatever it is, if you’re feeling like Jonah did and you don’t want to change your life, consider why. Is it because you’re living the life YOU want to live or the life God has for you? Choosing what He has for you means we choose HIM and HIS will, even over our own comfort. Don’t be afraid to step into what He’s calling you to. He loves you, and even in hard change, He is with you–whatever you do and wherever you go.
