Set Your Face Like Flint
By: Melissa Beauvais

Isaiah 50:7 reads “Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame” (NIV).

This verse comes from one of the seven “Servant Songs” which prophesy of the coming Messiah. This verse speaks of Jesus and to us.

Flint is a hard stone known to make tools and start fires. Its durability proved to be a useful tool for thousands of years in the Ancient world. So, what does Isaiah mean that we must set our face like flint?

Jesus set his face to Jerusalem (Luke 9:51). His mission kept Him determined to finish the task at hand, “For this is why I have come” Jesus says (Mark 1:38). Jesus kept the mission and the Kingdom of God in front of Him. Why? Because He loves. Nothing would get in the way or shift the mission, the stakes were high. His love for those with Him, for you, me, the world, kept His face towards Jerusalem.

Isaiah spoke to Israel and Judah with boldness. He chose to keep his face set on God, determined to remain strong. And just as Isaiah set his face like flint, we too can set our faces to God. We face hard times, pain, and distraction to pull us off course, but just as Isaiah and Jesus demonstrated, we will not be disgraced because we can remain firm in Christ. In this broken and fallen world, we can rest and set our faces to God’s will…firm to share and live out His Kingdom here on earth to those around us.

We will not be shaken.
