A Good Father
By: Pastor Todd Crofford

God has come to help his people.” -Luke 7:16 NIV

Upon graduation from college, I bought a new car.  It was a base model with absolutely no bells or whistles, but I got it, brand new- are you ready for this- for $4888.00!  I bought the car from a dealer in Boston where I went to college, then moved home to New York to prepare for my wedding.

A couple of weeks after I arrived home, I got a call from the dealership.  They claimed they had made some sort of internal error and gave me a rebate I did not deserve.  They insisted I needed to send them $400 immediately.  I was blown away. I was broke and didn’t have that money.

The next night at dinner, I told my dad what was going on, and he said, “The next time they call, hand the phone to me.”

About a week later, they called on a Saturday, and my dad was home.  After they repeated the same claim, I just said to them, “Hold on, my dad would like to speak to you.  I still remember his words to this day.

“You entered a contract with my son and now you are trying to change the terms and conditions.  So, if you would like, you can come get the car, and we will reverse the deal.  Here’s our address.” (It was about 400 miles from the dealership.)

We never heard from them again.

Can I tell you this 21-year-old still-finding-my-footing-in-the-world kid was never so happy as to know my Dad was for me?!  It’s always great to have someone wise and powerful on your side.

Know this-- the God of the universe is on your side. Jesus demonstrated it, and it blew those people away.

Nothing has changed.

I don’t think I can come up with better news than that this Christmas season. So, whatever you are facing, God is for you.

And that makes all the difference.
