The Joy of Jesus
By: Melissa Beauvais
Luke 2:28-35
This week of Advent, we celebrate the joy of our King.
His birth, His coming, and the hope of His coming again, we celebrate.
Joy can often have a harmonious connotation with happiness, yet Biblical joy is not about a feeling. Joy and sadness can co-exist, and often they do.
You see, this week, we celebrate in joy, despite our feelings that may be on the surface, of a King who has come for us.
Our Scripture today comes from Luke 2:28-35. Simeon knew he would not die before seeing the Messiah (v.26), and the day had come. Simeon, moved by the Spirit, came through the crowd and held God incarnate in his arms. Simeon knew this baby encompassed salvation to all.
“For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel”.
The King had arrived not on a chariot, not in lavish clothes, but as a babe and now there was in Simeon’s arms. Simeon could leave knowing he had peace that was filled with great joy.
Joy that the Savior had come for everyone. For Simeon, the world did not look different upon leaving. The Jewish people were still oppressed, hurt and death still happening, sin ran rampant, but there was joy that Salvation was here; Salvation is now.
The same joy is granted to us. While the world does not look different upon knowing Jesus, how we respond to the world does. This is the joy that is offered to us by Jesus the Messiah; will you accept and live into His invitation?
