Better than Money, Sweeter than Honey
By Pastor Mark White
“They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.” Psalm 19:10
There’s a beautiful sunset this evening as I’m sitting on my deck, the sun is setting with such magnificent colors. And, I’m not the first person to notice this, Psalms 19 begins with “the heavens declare the glory of God.”
These words are attributed to King David of Jerusalem but before he was a king, he was a kid. He was a shepherd tending his family’s flock. In case you didn’t know, shepherding isn’t an inside desk job but an outdoor job. I just wonder how many evenings when David was out with the sheep, was he able to watch a magnificent sunset?
How many nights out with his family’s flock did he lie on the ground to look up in the sky and just watch the stars come out one at a time? How many chilly mornings did he watch the sunrise over the Judean Mountains? David isn’t just singing about the beauty of nature but what that beauty points to.
So, it’s not just a magnificent day but a magnificent God.
Not just a glorious day but a glorious God.
God is revealing his generosity and goodness to us.
Declaring to us that he wants us to know and enjoy him and that we are invited to worship Him.
Now, David’s psalm takes a turn in a new direction. Instead of speaking about the way God reveals Himself in His creation, he begins to talk about the way that God reveals Himself in his Word. Switching from the beauty of nature to the beauty of God’s commandments. That they are perfect, trustworthy, right, and radiant and that when we fully lean on and trust God’s word it refreshes our souls, makes us wise, brings joy to our hearts, and light to our eyes.
The truth is we need this. Life gets heavy and we need a soul that's refreshed. We have complicated decisions to make, and complicated relationships and we need wisdom. We get discouraged and we need an infusion of joy. Or, sometimes we lose our way in the darkness, and we need His light to guide our way. And this, as David says, is better than money and sweeter than honey.
