During the meal Jesus took some bread in his hands. He blessed the bread and broke it. Then he gave it to his disciples and said, “Take this. It is my body.” Jesus picked up a cup of wine and gave thanks to God. He gave it to his disciples, and they all drank some. Then he said, “This is my blood, which is poured out for many people, and with it God makes his agreement. From now on I will not drink any wine, until I drink new wine in God’s kingdom.” Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
On the night of Passover, at the last supper, Jesus makes a bold proclamation! He declares himself the Passover Lamb! The Passover feast was a massive deal to Jewish people. It was the day they remembered God's miraculous delivery through the Exodus in Egypt! The lamb spared them from the wrath of God by the shedding of blood. For 1400 years, we watch as animals are offered as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of God's people through the Old Covenant. This practice was how humankind remained in God's favor despite their disobedience.
Year after year. Sacrifice after sacrifice. We see humanity’s constant disobedience matched only by God's faithful deliverance. The old covenant was a temporary solution to an eternal problem that God was already working out through His one and only Son. Jesus steps in, takes the cup, and announces HE is the New Covenant. He is our ultimate atoning sacrifice! Jesus reveals His body will be broken for those who follow after him! In this one-act, he is foretelling events to come, proclaiming a new way and professing ultimate redemption for humankind. At the cross, Christ defeated sin, and through the tomb, he defeated death! Praise you, LORD! Thank you for becoming our Passover lamb!
Prayer Focus – Today, we will pray for everyone in our community who does not know the name of Jesus as Lord and Savior, especially for those in your Oikos which you have invited. Pray that all hearts and minds become receptive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
