And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. (ESV)
In this story, we find several of Jesus' followers acting very harshly (possibly even his disciples, since they would have likely stayed closest to Jesus). We are reminded of the story of when Jesus' disciples tried to send away the children wanting to be near Jesus. Why did they act so unkindly? Of course, we would never act so! Perhaps you have been spurned by a church leader or pushed aside by a "busy" Christian at some time.
But the disciples had been dealing with loud, excited crowds now for 2-3 years. They were used to it—so much so that perhaps they had forgotten the desperation and passion of someone in great need. They were focused on "the job." But Jesus ALWAYS notices those in need and is NEVER too busy for those who cry out to him! He is ready to stop everything to reach out in love and kindness to heal and encourage us! Even when we're busy with Christian work, let's never neglect those who are desperate for Jesus!
Prayer Focus - Today, we will pray for all those struggling with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts in our community and that the Holy Spirit would bring such a person into our lives so we can share Jesus with them and help them overcome.
