On that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.” After dismissing the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. And a fierce gale of wind developed, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling with water. And yet Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
This well-known story of Jesus calming the storm tells of one of the few times when Jesus used his power over nature. The disciples who were fishermen had likely experienced many storms on that same lake, yet this one terrified them. They finally were so convinced that the boat would overturn, and they would all drown that they woke up Jesus. Their trust in Jesus was not in vain—he immediately calmed the storm, but then the reality hit the disciples. Wow! Jesus actually had power over the forces of nature! Now that REALLY terrified them!
Many leaders aspire to the power to control people, resources, or money. Yet even the greatest of man's achievements (beautiful cities, amazing engineering feats, the most modern inventions) can be wiped out in minutes by the power of "Mother Nature." Yet Jesus brought that wild power under control with just a few words of command!! Let's never forget who truly holds power—even when our situation is entirely desperate!
Prayer Focus – Pray for the Safety Team Leaders and Volunteer's as they serve and protect everyone in our congregation when we come to worship at Real Life.
