Heal: Beyond Brokenness Devotional Series – Week 2 – Second Wind – Thursday - Pastor Mark
What is it About Brokenness?
Scripture Reading - Psalm 34:18 (NLT)
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those who are crushed in spirit.”
I can’t tell you how many times my wife, Christine, has found a craft, piece of furniture, or a knick-knack at a yard sale for a dollar or two. An item that the owner has lost interest in or no longer sees the value because it is broken. Christine would purchase it, fix it, and give it her personal touch. She was often selling it for more than it was initially worth.
But all too often, we tend to despise broken things. We usually want to throw them away. Even when we hear the word broken, it implies that something is wrong. That something is not working the way it’s supposed to be. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, broken can have a few definitions, such as “violently separated into parts; shattered” or “subdued completely; crushed, sorrowful.”
We not only like to throw broken things away, we sometimes like throwing broken people away. Or at least discredit or devalue them. On the contrary, God seems to love and is drawn to broken people.
What is it about brokenness that attracts God's attention? Why does God love using broken people?
Maybe it’s because when we are broken, we genuinely recognize our need for God and call out to Him.
If your heart is broken today and you are in a place where you recognize your need for God, then you are in precisely the position where God wants you to be. He has purchased you by the blood of Jesus and is ready to give you His personal touch. And perhaps, you will recognize your value to Him and those around you for His glory.
All you have to do is call upon Him.
