Killing Me Softly Devotional Series – Week 4 – Imitating - Monday – Pastor Chris
Imitate Christ in All Things
3 John 1:11 (NASB)
“Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does what is good is of God; the one who does what is evil has not seen God.”
Imitation of mere mortals is the foundation for limitation; to be the best, you must be yourself. And your best self is found only in Jesus Christ. Imitation is the copying of a pattern of activity or thought of a person. It makes complete sense in my mind that if you or I are going to imitate anyone, then it should be Jesus Christ, not a mere mortal, but God Incarnate.
From our scripture above, it is clear that there is an imitation that is good, void of evil. That type of imitation empowers and brings limitless Holy Spirit power within us. On the contrary, there is an imitation that is evil, void of good. This type of imitation tries to suppress and limit the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.
In John 15, Jesus talks about being connected to the true vine. The true vine is God. Pastor Stephen Furtick said these profound words recently:
“Are you hooked up to the real thing? Or have you developed a false attachment to a false version of yourself, or the opinions of others? Faith flourishes when it finds its flow from the One true vine.”
Let me give you three things to look at this week, spiritual assignments, if you will.
#1 - Determine in your heart to be what God wants you to be.
#2 - Humbly follow the good examples of others but never follow anybody in the wrong direction no matter who they are.
#3 - Desire and strive to be like Jesus Christ ultimately.
Pray this prayer with me today:
Gracious and Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your Word to me today. Deliver me from the lifestyle of limiting the Holy Spirit. Instead, please help me be more like your son Jesus Christ and invoke the Holy Spirit's fullness every day, hour, minute, and second of my life. Amen.
