Killing Me Softly Devotional Series – Week 2 – Procrastination - Friday – Shirley Davis
Unforgettable Lesson
Proverbs 27:1 (NLT)
"Don't brag about tomorrow, since you don't know what the day will bring."
Raising six children on our small farm in East Texas was challenging every day. By necessity, we grew and produced almost all our food. It was a fulfilling lifestyle, although it meant long hours of chores every day. No one likes doing chores—by definition, "those unpleasant but necessary tasks." It helped me recognize that chores are my responsibilities due to my choices or simply God's life for me. So, I believe God wants me to carry them out to the best of my ability each day. I remember a simple phrase written in a schoolroom that encourages me: "Delayed obedience is disobedience." This phrase was later illustrated perfectly by what happened one day on our farm.
My husband and I had spent the long, wintry day butchering a large pig, finally finishing as it grew dark. We put all the skin, bones, and entrails into a wheelbarrow until the morning. My stepson Leslie was a preteen, so after breakfast, we asked him to take the wheelbarrow and dump it into the pond to feed the fish. As I was getting the children ready to catch the school bus, I asked Leslie if he had tossed it, and he told me that he had.
Later that morning, I went around the side of the house and discovered the wheelbarrow still full! The weather was warming up, and I was tempted to do the grisly task myself but decided to teach Leslie a lesson. By the time he returned home from school, the Texas sun had caused the pile of intestines to swell so much they no longer fit in the wheelbarrow, and flies were buzzing everywhere! I wish I had a picture of Leslie's face when I led him to the side of the house!
Leslie, not only caught in a lie, experienced the natural results of the morning procrastination. This incident served as both an unforgettable lesson as well as a punishment!
