Killing Me Softly Devotional Series – Week 1 – Comparison – Wednesday - Lori Ennis
Comparison: Being Known For Who I Am
Jeremiah 1:5a (NIV)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”
I am short. I have frizzy hair. I have a big mouth. If you ask my husband, he’d tell you I have a VERY big mouth.
I spent much of my childhood picked on for being a ‘bookworm,’ a ‘shrimp,’ and ‘ugly,’ among other things. As an adult, I’ve often compared myself to other military spouses who seemed to have it all together, while I have stayed short, still frizzy-haired and big-mouthed.
I recently heard a Christmas song about Mary and how she must have been as a woman and a mother. How she must have felt being ‘no one special,’ and yet, the mother of the Great I Am. I imagined what she must have thought when the angel told her she’d bear the son of God. It’s her reply that always gets me.
Mary fully knew who she was. “I am the Lord’s servant. May Your word to me be fulfilled.”
She didn’t ask how it would happen, or if the angel was sure she was the right person, or even why God chose her, though I’m sure she wondered. I sure would.
No, she just trusted in who God was and who He had purposed HER to be. He’d created her. For HIS glory. For HIS purpose. And she was exactly who GOD wanted the mother of Jesus to be.
How encouraging when we don’t feel we are enough! When we wonder what in the world God thought when we set about the tasks He’s called us to tackle? So often, I am filled with overwhelming awe and exhilaration that God would create a short, frizzy-haired, big-mouthed girl to not only love Him but to live for Him and to fulfill a purpose He created JUST FOR ME.
Don’t compare yourself to others; instead, look inside and hear what the Holy Spirit says about you. You were fearfully and wonderfully made, and before you were even in your mother’s womb, God had set YOU apart!
