Family Tree Devotional Series - Week 1 – Hope - Tuesday - Amie Donovan
Spiritual Hope Anchors in an Unfailing God.
Psalm 130:5-7 (NIV)
"I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the LORD more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption."
Throughout the bible, we see different words used for Hope. The word wait in the above passage is the Hebrew word for Hope, Qavah. I love this word because Qavah comes from the root word QAV, which means cord. Think about this with me. When you try to snap a cord, there's tension and anticipation in the wait. Imagine holding it in your hand, and you're pulling with all your might causing great tension. The anticipation is growing as you hear each fiber begin to burst apart. You likely don't take your eyes off it, afraid you'll miss the big break. "I Qavah for the Lord, my whole being waits." I dare not take my eyes off of Him because HE alone is my source of Hope.
I love the next part of this passage where it says, "In his word, I put my hope." This hope is so contrary to everything we know in the world. Worldly hope is more an optimistic way of thinking. It's saying; I choose to see the potential for positive in every and any circumstance. Spiritual hope doesn't require the right environment or self-talk—spiritual hope anchors in a person, not a mindset. The kind of hope we read in the bible is often written by people who knew the evidence of relief might never come to this side of heaven, but yet they chose HOPE in God anyway! They knew what we often miss. That we have Hope in our tomorrow because, in the word, we see our God throughout our yesterday. As Christians, we look behind us to draw patience in the wait for what's to come.
Pray This Prayer Today:
Father God, may we have a renewed understanding of what Hope truly means! May we not miss your faithfulness and consistency in delivering your children from ultimate separation from you! We place our hope in you and wait patiently because you are an unfailing God who provided ultimate redemption through your Son, Amen.
