Brave Devotional Series - Week 6 – Not So Grim Reaper - Wednesday – Allison Hand
The Final Rest
Hebrews 4:9-10 (NIV)
“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.”
The Sabbath, the seventh-day rest, is not just an Old Testament idea for only Jewish people. This idea of rest always has God’s intention for us. When God created the world on the seventh day, he ceased what he was doing and settled in with his creation. God’s purpose was for people to do the same, to live in constant communion between God and humanity.
But of course, we mess up, we sin, and sin's results brought hard work and toil and struggle on this earth for us. So, God had the Jewish people practice this Sabbath, where they ceased from all work for one day a week every single week, recognizing God’s dominion over time and people. The Sabbath was pointing towards Jesus. Jesus brought restoration to creation for anyone who believes in him and can have that constant communion with God again.
But it gets better! We have the hope of a final and ultimate Sabbath rest where we live forever in the presence of God, and all the toil, work, and struggle ceases to exist! This vision of the ultimate rest is a beautiful hope for us. Find inner rest in Jesus’ presence today but look forward with joy to a never-ending rest with God.
