Give Thanks
By: Allison Hand
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Have you ever been around a person who complains and gripes about every situation? Who moans and groans when life gets hard? I have been that person! So focused on what I don’t have or the circumstance I don’t want to be in and making sure those around me hear and see how I feel.
I can imagine Paul understood that this mindset is easy to fall into. Which is why we are slowing down today to read this Scripture.
Paul wrote to encourage a church not only struggling to follow Jesus in a culture that did not share the same views. But to a persecuted church who faced opposition and rejection and pain for remaining faithful to Christ.
Paul didn’t tell them to thank God for the circumstance. But to live out thankfulness to God in the midst of the circumstance. I can imagine how this changed how they lived out their lives in their oikos. They lived as people filled with eternal hope and mindset. Reminding themselves on what Christ had done for them and what God has given them. Focused on being ready for the day they meet Christ. Knowing that when we suffer we become like Christ. And that God is working good even during that.
How has your attitude been? Where can you ask God to help you do better?
