Heal Devotional Series – Week 1 – Do You Want to be Well – Wednesday - Lori Ennis
Healing Is A Choice
Scripture Reading - Matthew 11:28 NASB
“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
I won’t lie; I don’t love that phrase—‘healing is a choice’. But the truth is, it really is.
I don’t love it because if I am honest, the word ‘healing’ leads people to believe that all is well after something horrible happened, and that’s just not simply true sometimes.
Sometimes…your child dies, and you won’t ever be fully healed, and it won’t ever be fully ‘well’ on this earth. But still…there is healing. If you let there be.
There’s a saying that goes along the lines of time healing all wounds. That’s a lie.
Time may give perspective for you to see the providence of the past. Time may take away the pain's intensity, so it doesn’t feel so raw in the years to come. But only Jesus heals.
Only Jesus walks beside you and weeps with you as you lay your burdens at His feet.
My son was born on November 28. His name was Matthew. He died the day after he was born, but his birthday verse—Matthew 11:28—couldn’t put God’s desire for your heart to find rest when it’s broken any better. “Come to me all who are weary and I will give you rest.” In verse 29, we’re further told that His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
Pay close attention to the first part of verse 28, though. We are told to come to Him.
When our hearts are broken, or our bodies are plagued with a physical ailment, Jesus wants nothing more than to take you in His arms and give you rest. He doesn’t just want to do that out of the goodness of His heart. He gave His life so He could be our ultimate tear catcher and redeemer.
But we have to let Him. Don’t let anger or bitterness or visions of what is ‘fair’ steal the rest He so desperately wants to give you. He’s calling and waiting. It’s your choice to accept.
