Killing Me Softly Devotional Series – Week 2 – Procrastination - Tuesday - Amie Donovan
Procrastination is Pride
Scripture Reading – Ephesians 5:15-17 (ESV)
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”
I’ve heard it said, “Procrastination is Pride because it assumes you know the future.” As Paul wrote in his letter to the Church of Ephesus, we pay close attention to how we live, as to not live as the foolish but rather to live as the wise. We are to walk out understanding of what our Lord's will is for our lives—making the most of each day given.
So often, when we hear the word procrastination, our minds go to worldly things. We put off changing the light fixture or painting the baseboards. Some of us avoid the conversation or save the yard for another day. Spiritual procrastination is about so much more than a to-do list. It’s avoiding forgiveness that shows reconciliation to the lost. It’s forgetting the importance of growing from God's Holy Word. It’s excusing the conversation with your friend who needs to hear the truth because you’re busy with things that could wait until tomorrow.
Procrastination from walking in God's will is like saying to God, “Their soul can wait. Your word is on my list tomorrow. Your purposes don’t match my agenda in my life right now.”
To assume you have tomorrow is to consider you know the number of your days. To ask God when you wake up to direct your steps, to move your thoughts, to speak through your words in whatever HIS will for your day is acknowledges tomorrow may never come. It’s a choice to live in the truth; all you know is He gave you a right now.
Pray this prayer with me:
Father, would you forgive us for the things we place over your will. We thank you for a chance to think differently and get it right. God, would you direct our steps into your list for our day and help us put down our own. We love you, God, and appreciate your patience as we grow into who it is you want us to become. Amen.
