Stewarding Our Time Well
By: Melissa Giles
The kids and I went out shopping for my husband’s birthday a few years ago and I picked this adorable clock up for him!
I thought to myself, he definitely needs this reminder!
Well I am going to be honest with you and admit I was judging him. In that season it was becoming more evident to me that time is a precious gift.
One day shortly after that purchase I realized that I had little to no time for my first ministries. My marriage and my children. I started to recognize that time passed and I really hadn’t been dedicated to them. No matter how many boxes I checked off my to do lists I still felt unproductive and anxious.
I stayed in a constant state of “busy-ness”. I allowed and invited distractions to dictate my days. Whenever God is not in the center of my to do list, life gets quite unbalanced.
I heard once that we all have the same 24 hours to spend each day. The hard truth is that time cannot be saved or returned to us, but it can be budgeted well and spent for what truly matters.
Colossians 3:2 is a great reminder of how to focus. “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things”.
I believe God does expect us to steward our brief time well. To make careful and wise use of the time He has given. Psalm 39:4-5 has humbled me in this process. It says, “Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.”
I decided I needed more intentional time with the Lord, my family and even more time of rest! So, I make appointments with God that are non negotiable, I put limits on my phone for many items that are distractions, and I turn off and walk away from my phone and computer. I budget my time wisely.
My prayer today is that you ask God to show you what He wants for your time here on earth. That he helps you prioritize your life in a way that glorifies Him. That we can be an example to our children and within our Oikos, the world around us, that we should cherish and steward time well.
