Humility
By: Pastor Todd

Can I resurrect a catchy little writing? The author is unknown. (You may have to read it twice to really appreciate it!)

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

Jesus’ version of that goes like this, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:25-28)

The four operative words to instruct us are stuck right in the middle - Not so with you. Everyone else looks around at the pecking order to decide who needs to do the dishes, run the errand, stay late and pick up the ballfield or scrub the toilet. Jesus says, we don’t view power or position that way.

This weekend, choose one thing that no one else is willing to do and just do it willingly. Don’t do it loudly so that others will notice, and certainly don’t do it while complaining so that others will feel bad. Just do it because you can. It will put a smile on God’s face, and I bet it will put one on yours too.
