Does God Care About What We Listen To?
By: Anna Williams

“Everything is permissible (allowable and lawful) for me; but not all things are helpful (good for me to do, expedient and profitable when considered with other things). Everything is lawful for me, but I will not become the slave of anything or be brought under its power.”
-1 Corinthians 6:12 AMP

Music can have a profound effect on us. It can convey our emotions. It can bring people together. Every culture all over the world has its own songs and dances with its own version of music.

Quite often, music is beneficial to us. Studies have shown that having background music while studying or performing repetitive tasks can increase productivity. It can also help us to think creatively. So, if music has positive effects, why would God care what type of music we listen to? Why would we need to be careful about what songs we choose?

There can be negative effects from certain kinds of music. Some songs can impact our mood, making us feel sad, prideful, or angry. Various styles of heavy metal and iconic 90’s pop songs were used in conjunction with sleep deprivation by the CIA as a method of torture!

How do you suppose God feels about lyrics that speak of promiscuity, drug use and violence? Is it beneficial to us or others to sing lyrics about how depressed we are and how much we dislike ourselves? Today’s top ten lists are full of songs with these types of lyrics.

God has not given us a clear listing in the Bible of which genres and artists we can listen to and which ones to stay away from; however, we can ask the Holy Spirit to guide us to choose the options that do not displease God.

Take a moment to think about your most frequently used playlist… If Jesus suddenly appeared to you, took your phone, and thumbed through your favorite music app, would he be pleased by what he would find there?

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14 ESV
