Can God Forget?
By: Nicole Goddard

A recurring theme of shame for me is when I’ve lost my patience with my kids and raise my voice at them. Later, I will snuggle them and apologize and am always met with grace-filled hugs and kisses, however the running dialogue of “Will they only remember an impatient Mom that yells?” takes up real estate in my mind and becomes a bed of shame. I wholeheartedly believe they forgive me, but will they forget?

This can feel crippling when we consider our sins against our creator. The Bible tells us over and over that Jesus forgives our sins when we put our faith in him. And I think many of us can buy into that. But can we also believe he will forget our trespasses? Surely, if enough of them stack up or if I repeat the offense enough times, God will wash his hands of me. After all, this often  happens in our human relationships.

But no, we have to remind ourselves we are made in God’s image, not the other way around. His ways aren’t our ways. He can forgive and he CAN forget.

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21.

A favorite Bible study of mine rephrases this most eloquently:
“Because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross, when God looks at you, He sees the perfection of Christ.”

He doesn’t keep track of your running list of sins. He doesn’t want you laying in a bed of shame. He wants you to walk with your head high in the perfection of Christ and follow him. May you believe this for yourself this Christmas season!
