I’ll Carry That
By: Chrissy Cooney

I am notorious for overloading myself with bags while bringing groceries in from the car. I try to carry so much that I am either dropping things or cutting off the circulation to my hand. One trip or no trips, am I right?

My hero husband often saves the day by meeting me in the doorway with open arms and relieving me of my burden. He shakes his head at me every single time, reminding me that it would be smarter and better not to put myself in that situation – but he takes the bags nonetheless and lightens my load.

I once had a terrible disagreement with a very dear friend. That night, as I related the incident to my husband, he listened supportively right up until I said, “I know that I should be the one to be humble and vulnerable – I just don’t want to do that this time.” He just tilted his head and looked at me in expectation.

Galatians 6:2-3 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.  If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.” As soon as I said I didn’t WANT to be humble, I knew what I had to do.

Apologize.
Forgive.
And lift the burden by going first.
This is the path to love.

The truth is, we don’t have the right to act any other way – not as Christians, not as those who obey God’s commands. We have a responsibility to act in love and that means owning our share of the burden and extending the grace that alleviates the other person’s burden as well. Meeting them at the door with open arms and lightening their load.
