It’s a Family Thing
Pastor Chrissy Cooney

“Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, ‘Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.’ He replied, ‘My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.’” Luke 8:19-21

My family has all kinds of inside jokes. Sometimes it even seems like we have our own language – phrases that mean something to us because of our shared experiences, words that have taken on nontraditional meanings when used in family context. Things that you would have to be in our inner circle to pick up on. My daughter’s fiancé (my future son-in-law) has been around us enough now that he’s started to pick up on and understand some of those inside jokes and family phrases. He’s become part of our family – part of our inner circle.

When I read this passage from Luke 8:19-21 I can’t help but think that Jesus is telling us how to be in His inner circle.

The crowds are thick, and Jesus’ mother and brothers are having trouble getting close to him. They are standing outside, wanting to come in. Jesus’ response is that “those who hear God’s word and put it into practice” are his family. If we want to be on the inside with Jesus’ – the way to do that is to read His Word and apply it.

When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we become part of the family of God. By spending time in His Word, allowing the Holy Spirit to give us understanding, and putting His Word into practice – we begin to understand what it means to be in His family.

Luke 8:19-25
GOD’S WORD Translation

The True Family of Jesus
19 His mother and his brothers came to see him. But they couldn’t meet with him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside. They want to see you.”

21 He answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do what God’s word says.”

Jesus Calms the Sea
22 One day Jesus and his disciples got into a boat. He said to them, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they started out. 23 As they were sailing along, Jesus fell asleep.

A violent storm came across the lake. The boat was taking on water, and they were in danger. 24 They went to him, woke him up, and said, “Master! Master! We’re going to die!”

Then he got up and ordered the wind and the waves to stop. The wind stopped, and the sea became calm. 25 He asked them, “Where is your faith?”

Frightened and amazed, they asked each other, “Who is this man? He gives orders to the wind and the water, and they obey him!”
