Serving the God of Second Chances
By: Anna Williams
The “less talk, more action” folks can get a lot done in society. On a battlefield, they make quick decisions to stop opposing forces. But that same skill set can become a detriment if it gets overridden by emotions.
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.” – Luke 22:31-32
Jesus had the conversation above with Simon Peter hours before Jesus was arrested. If you read through the accounts of the Last Supper, the arrest in the Garden and the subsequent arraignment of Jesus – it's not hard to understand why Peter had conflicting emotions.
Jesus had made a comment about joining rebels; some of the disciples had swords and now a force was coming under cover of darkness to take Jesus away. In a flash of bravery, Peter draws his sword and strikes a manservant of the high priest… but then Jesus stops the fighting and heals the man! He just gives up and lets them take him away.
Bravery gives way to confusion. Nothing is happening like Peter thought it would. He is reeling from the loss of perceived control and ends up denying he even knew Jesus.
But something huge happens – he witnesses the death and resurrection of Christ and his resolve solidifies forever. Jesus gives him the chance to reaffirm his love three times over and thus begins the amazing ministry of the Apostle Peter – a founding father of the Church. (John 21)
Never let Satan sell you the lie that it’s too late to choose Jesus.
