I was riding three-notch-trail on my Ebike a few weeks ago and it was almost dark. Ahead of me it appeared a small black trash can had blown onto the trail. Right as I got to it, I realized it wasn’t a trash can; it was a dog! (The snarling and exposed teeth gave it away). At that moment I was very grateful for battery assist. Between the adrenalin and the battery, I was soon able to leave him behind without him getting a taste of my leg.
If it had been daylight, I would not have confused a dog for a trash can, but lack of light can do that. In the same way, when we spend too much time away from the light of being with God, our spirits dim and we can begin to mistake other things for him. Paul said it this way,
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (II Corinthians 4:4)
If we don’t make every effort to stay close to Jesus, we will find ourselves propping up other things as our god instead. Money, hobbies, sex, popularity or power make poor replacements for God. And it won’t take long before that mistake will really bite us!
